In February I went off to Carter's Steam Fair in Maidenhead for a week, to learn Traditional Fairground Art, with Joby Carter. It was an incredible week, and I'd love to share what I learned. I'll be introducing you to: pouncing, blocking, gradients, flamboyant glazing, and lining. It took 5 full days to pick up what I know so far, and an apprenticeship is 5 years, so I can't promise we'll get that far in a couple of hours, but I hope to wet your appetites. I'll buy a few spare brushes so you can have a go [any excuse to go to an art shop], and I'll bring along the piece that I made on the course to talk you through it. Here's a video from Carter's to get you inspired: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YazC-XfMIXg PS. It's not a lettering / typography class, but more about the decorative techniques - do a Google Image search for Fred Fowle + you'll see what I mean. NB: Wear something you don't mind getting gloss paint or white spirit on.

Bring one of the following:
Anglepoise-type desk light
Old picture frame or mirror
Seedlings for garden veg
Tea lights [unscented]
Tin enamel mug / bowl
Unsalted nuts

One of my party tricks (perhaps my only one) is teaching people to write their names in Hebrew. The alphabet is pretty fun and simple to learn, and might come in handy if you ever want to read the bible in its original form, impress your Israeli friends or, like me, just be able to say that you can read Hebrew. Might prove to be a good pick up line. Please please please- no political stuff. This is simply an opportunity to learn something new.

Bring one of the following:
Animal suit
Chocolate Freddo
MP3 files of various language learning courses
Seeds for planting- anything edible
Yarn
