Trade School is a non traditional learning community which runs on barter. In other words, Trade School is a self-organising learning space in which teachers offer classes, in exchange for barter items provided by students. No money allowed.
Trade School Port of Spain works like this:
1) People offer to teach a class about something they know.
2) Teachers decide on a list of barter items they're interested in receiving. Barter items can be in the form of goods or services, both tangible and intangible. For example: jars, music tips, clothes, vegetables, or help with something like finding an apartment. Every class' barter items will be different, since it is set by the teacher.
3) Students sign up for classes on our website, and, by signing up, they agree to bring 1 of the barter items requested by the instructor.
4) On the day of class, the teachers & students meet in a space that is made available by Trade School Port of Spain. Students give their barter item to the teacher, and the class begins!
Trade School is a place to learn with other people who value practical wisdom, mutual aid, and the social nature of exchange. We believe that everyone has something to offer.
We are a constantly expanding group of curious, rigorous, and compassionate volunteers sharing skills to create spaces of hope and to ignite brain sparks in non-conventional educational topics. Our current Trade School Port of Spain team members are Sasha Jattansingh, Kosi Thomas, Kavita Jattansingh and Cheyenne Baptiste.
Operating under the Non-profit organisation 868Change, which is the same group that brought you TEDxPortofSpain, we are not only interested in bringing interesting ideas to Port of Spain, but also providing a platform for "ideas worth doing".
