Me? A Teacher?! Exploring Theatre of the Oppressed
7:00pm to 8:30pm75 East 4th Street
New York
Have you recently wound up in the role of "teacher?" What does it mean to be an educator, and how can you best teach and learn with your "students?" Designed especially but not exclusively for Trade School educators, this workshop is for anyone who has wound up as the "teacher" and wants to better understand how they can best support learning. We'll use Theatre of the Oppressed, a series of creative, interactive tools that involve the body and voice in ways that spark innovative and critical thinking. Fast-paced and anything but boring, this workshop helps educators to explore their roles as "teachers" through creative game play, critical reflection and deep dialogue while having lots of fun!
About the teacher, The Forum Project
The Forum Project (TFP) uses creative tools to create change by educating individuals and communities on important social issues and providing them with tools to combat the oppression. We use critical education, Theatre of the Oppressed and other creative techniques and provide opportunities for individuals and communities to explore, challenge themselves and others, and deconstruct power while having fun in a collaborative and interactive environment. Through workshops and performances we promote critical thinking, dialogue, personal growth, transformation and action.

The term 'craftivism' is being used more and more nowadays. But what is craftivism and what is it not? During this lecture/discussion/debate we can learn about how craft can be used effectively as a tool for activism, mobilising and deep public engagement. Analysing examples of craftivism throughout history and looking at the benefits of craftivism for the viewer, reciever and viewer hopefully you will be convinced that, used in the best way, craft can and should be part of the activism tool kit.
About the teacher, Sarah Corbett
I live in London but I'm in NYC 10th May-10th June for work and holiday. I grew up in the fourth most deprived area in the UK and my background is in engaging people in global injustices working for large INGOs, the UK Department for International Development and most recently for Oxfam GB as a campaigner. I started doing craftivism (craft + activism) in 2009 as a hobby and reaction to traditional forms of activism. Due to demand I set up the global Craftivist Collective in 2010 which now has thousands of members. This hobby has turned me (randomly!) into one of the leading spokespeople in the craftivism movement (The Times featured me as the leader of one of their 5 'New Tribes' of 2012). I have worked with Tate, Hayward, cult jewellers Tatty Devine, TOMS Shoes, British Library, Secret Cinema & Save the Children amongst others. As well as collaborating with charities and art institutions, I also make & sell products, delivers workshops & talks & exhibits my own craftivism work around the world.Â

According to Bataille, a kind of horror (and hence modesty) regarding the shape and size of the foot begins in the modern era. What is it about this part of ourselves that touches the ground? How do we fashion it, and what are we doing when we do so? Cinderella, ballet shoes, high heels, foot binding, men's dress shoes... All to help us with the perennial question, "whatever shall I wear?"
