100+ Years of Moviegoing in Indianapolis
2:30pm to 4:00pmIndy Reads Books at 911 Mass Ave
Indianapolis
Just as the types of movies we have watched have changed over the past century, so have the ways that we have watched those movies. From screenings in vaudeville halls and nickelodeons to early single-screen theaters and the grand movie palaces that followed, and from the rise and fall of drive-ins and grindhouses to the evolution of the modern-day multiplex, this course will cover the changing ways that we have gone to the movies in Indy, from the dawn of silent films to the current era. In addition to the now-vanished theaters that once thrived in Indianapolis, the course also will look into the locations of theaters in and near the Circle City, what kinds of movies they showed over the years, and how changes in these areas reflected the evolution of the city's population. Contemporary newspaper advertisements and other sources will be used to illustrate and illuminate the changing movie scene in Indianapolis over the past century, and the course also will mention changes in other ways of watching movies in Indianapolis, from broadcasts on local television stations to home video rental outlets and beyond.
Taught by Mike MacCollum
I am a long time movie fan, and also have a great interest in local movie theaters. In case that sentence is just too obvious, given the course description, I am also a vegetarian and have a dog, Sarah, who really likes to walk, and walk, and walk.

Sight & Write: Journaling about Cinema
2:30pm to 4:00pmIndy Reads Books at 911 Mass Ave
Indianapolis
I am interested in teaching a course on free association writing in response to watching films. I would like to screen a short a film or two during the session, then have participants in the course journal freely without thinking about their experience after watching the film(s). It can be a critique of the film itself, how it made the viewer feel, or whatever the first thing comes to mind. Discussion of the film after the writing prompt will follow and sharing what was written is encouraged, but not required. The goal of this course is to teach others how to become more perceptive to what they are seeing/experiencing and how to express those thoughts onto paper or verbally during discussion in a more non traditional sense.
