Where are you right now? Are you in a religious country? If you answered “Halifax” and “no”, you might be wrong. Not entirely wrong, but not entirely correct. The current influx of refugees has tested Canada’s social imagination and understanding of self, particularly considering Canada’s internal and international identity as a secular country with a policy of multiculturalism. As we approach the 150th anniversary of confederation we must ask; how did Canada transform from a colonial settlement to a state which purports to be inclusive and multicultural? What role did religion play in the founding and early development of Canada? Is there a comparison between the development of Canada and the current destruction in the middle east? By analysing the early European conquest of what is now North America as a dual economic and evangelical mission, Rob Perry will tie the history of Canada to the present conflicts abroad and make a case for Canada’s involvement in aiding, assisting and attempting to resolve the migrant/refugee crisis.
