Ever been confused by works of art? Starting with Modern Art, which is often portrayed as ‘difficult to understand’, we will discuss the language of art and the differences between looking, seeing and perceiving. Don’t be put off by other people’s opinions or the weighty articles of academics! There is no right or wrong way of seeing. With acknowledgements to the many people who have investigated this subject with more understanding and vision than me!!! Join us to step towards a clearer understanding of what we are looking at and ‘seeing’ when we look at ‘works of art’.

Bring one of the following:
A notebook to put down your thoughts to review later
A pebble
An offer to teach a trade school class
An old brick
An old rusty bit of something
If you like, bring an example of a work you ‘don’t understand’

About the teacher, Janet

Janet was born and lives in Dudley. A graduate of Chelsea School of Art, she has worked with people of all ages to facilitate learning about Art, in schools, colleges /adult education and voluntary sector workshops (from Oh! in Bethnal Green to Edinburgh College of Art). Has long ago come to the conclusion that art can’t be ‘taught’! (But people can be helped to see for themselves).
