About the teacher, Gerolf Mosemann

Basic vocal technique

12:00p.m. to 1:30p.m.
Boys Club
Gneisenaustraße 52
Berlin DE

The basics anybody using their voice for regular public speaking or singing should know. How does it work? The way your voice sounds is the result of the collaboration of about 15 muscle groups. Each muscle group adds a particular feature to the voice. Learning to identify and to adjust them enables you to alter the way your voice sounds or functions. You can compare it to cooking: you have one basic ingredient, being your core voice, and those 15 ingredients. You don't have to use all the ingredients if you want to prepare something nice; nore do you have to use the ingredients in their full quantity. This means the possibilities are endless. You simply follow the recipe and end up with as close as your voice allows you to get to a Pavarotti opera sound, an Obama speech voice, or a Chet Baker whisper, to just name a few. I will take you through the basic functioning of the voice, name a few common vocal pitfalls and solutions to them, and learn you how to control a few muscle groups that will immediately increase voice stability and power, while making the voice easier to use, and more durable (no more tickeling throats and hoarse voices).

ASMR, Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response, is a physiological reaction to soft sounds like brushing or whispering. A tingling up and down your spine, in your head. Some percentage of the population has ASMR*, but even if you do not, these sounds still register as soothing and hypnotic. A wonderful YouTube culture has sprung up around this response, wherein "ASMRtists" make videos to "trigger" the reaction. The videos are rampant with exhibitionism, fetishism, and empty expressions of concern, all undertaken in an effort to connect with and comfort strangers. Good examples are here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqy424r7es0&list=PLe2hNiHTzbyr7Ys06JRLSJNizlKCMM2Aw and here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2g9e2ner9sE and here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GsnnIPpNehM. In this one-hour class, I will provide a brief introduction to ASMR. Then we will do some listening exercises, writing exercises, and discuss the processes of recording and remixing sounds. If possible, please bring your laptops and a pair of headphones. *Extensive studies have not yet been completed. Visible Mending

5:00p.m. to 6:30p.m.
Boys Club
Gneisenaustraße 52
Berlin DE

Hand mending is a meditative relaxing process that allows us to appreciate the act of being self-reliant. We use and dispose of clothing faster than any generation before us; because of this we lack a connection to the fabric that houses us every day. Beyond the purchase we don’t feel particular ownership or pride once we feel we have used up its value. Through this workshop participants will learn to extend the life and increase the value of their clothing through the reflective labor of hand mending. This workshop focuses on visible mending as intentional and beautiful design to highlight the value of our clothing. After this workshop, participants will have the skills and knowledge to creatively repair holes and strengthen thinning fabric, using two different mending techniques. Participants will know how to evaluate a worn item and determine the best method of repair.
